Cabinetmaker Heinrich Engelgart Steinway (the founder of the company) came from the German Steinweg family, one of whose members, Theodor Steinweg, owned the Grotrian-Steinweg piano company in Braunschweig. Heinrich made his first piano in the kitchen of his own house in Germany. 482 instruments were created in this way at home, after which Heinrich decided to emigrate to the USA and found his own company.

After emigrating, he changed his surname to the American style (Steinway), translating its last syllable from German into English, "weg" ("the way") - "way".
The first Steinway piano, No. 483, made in the USA, was sold for $500 and is currently in the New York Museum of Art.
Henry Steinway had five sons who continued their father's business. In 1867, the company was the first American company to be awarded the Grand Gold Medal of Honor ("For Excellence in Creation").
